The Day Downton Abbey Broke my Heart

**************************This post contains spoilers…a very large spoiler in fact, so if you watch Downton Abbey but have not seen the newest episode from last night or don’t watch the show but are thinking about watching it (you totally should by the way.  It is a GREAT show), you should definitely not read the rest of this post.  Fair warning! ******************************

Last night I tucked my kids into bed giving my 4-year-old a very stern warning that he had better go straight to sleep tonight.  Downton was coming on and I wanted to be able to sit and enjoy it without any of his 57 nonsense requests and discussions that he uses to get around going to sleep.  However, if you could have peeked in my living room window about an hour and a half later, you would have seen me bawling like a baby clearly not enjoying the turn the show had just taken.  I don’t usually say anything about television shows or movies, but after last night and as ridiculous as it sounds, I needed a little mourning period in the form of a blog post.  Yes we are talking about a fictional character, but I am sure that there are plenty of people out there sharing in this sadness.  And let me tell you, this isn’t the first fictional character I have cried over (TV, movie, book, you name it) and I am fairly certain it won’t be the last.

I should probably say this to start.  I am a crier.  I have been for as long as I can remember and it doesn’t take a lot to set me off.  Last night though, I wasn’t just shedding a few tears, I was practically sobbing for like half an hour.  If you are still reading this, I assume that you have either already seen the episode or don’t care so I can say it… I cannot believe that they killed off Lady Sybil!  And the way they did it, that was designed to make women everywhere (probably like 80% of their demographic) burst into tears.

When you watch a show like Game of Thrones (another favorite in our house) you get used to the main characters getting beheaded left and right.  But that isn’t supposed to happen in a period piece on PBS.  It just isn’t!  I mean, I get it.  You need drama and plot turns to keep a show interesting and I am all for that.  It’s just sad to see one of your favorite characters sacrificed for this purpose.  And killing her from child birth…let me reiterate that that really was the absolute WORST way

they could have killed her.  I said this to my husband as we were walking up the stairs to bed last night and he said “They could have made Edith so jealous of Sybil’s happiness that Edith stabbed her in the chest.” (too much Game of Thrones) My response, “This was worse.”  For half of the episode you are thinking, “Men are idiots”, “if she had only been born 60 years later”, “men are complete idiots”, “she will never get to see her baby grow up”, and on and on.  It really broke my heart.  I felt like I had lost a dear friend.

Okay, I guess I have done enough mourning for Lady Sybil.  With a heavy heart, I will say though, I am intrigued to see how Branson and the Crawleys work together to raise the baby and what happens between Lord and Lady Grantham (poor Lord Grantham has had a rough go of it recently).

Do you watch the show?  What are your thoughts?  Was your heart broken last night too?
